Beatdown on the Amherst Network

I hate hate hate the amherst network.

I was working on my thesis off of my network drive which i'd been doing these past few days since i've been shuttling between here and the library/computer center alot to do my work. But just now word froze up while i was working, said that it apparently couldn't connect to the network drive for some reason and shut down.

And took all the work I've been doing today on my thesis with it.

Well fuck. Fuckity fuck. Fuck.

I guess its time to start again.

Almost there

Turkey break! Okay, so i still have orgo lecture and section tomorrow, but i'm almost there. Plus, I am the bearer of a ticket to see Harry Potter tomorrow evening which probably excites me way more than it should.

I'm actually kind of ambivalent about break this year. After all, it's no class for a week (hurrah!), but I have to do ridiculous amounts of work on my thesis this break, in addition to studying for orgo and doing tons of reading for my seminar as always. Plus, it means that there's no time at all until the end of the semester after we get back, which in turn means I have no time before I have to hand in the draft of my intro (~30 pgs) for my thesis. Ugh. i really am baffled as to how i did so much work for my thesis before the beginning of the semester and yet managed to do so little during hte semester. i should be way ahead of the game, instead i'm probably at about the same place as (or even behind..eep) everyone else. Here's the goal: 20 pgs of (super rough) draft by the end of break. That's like five pages a day before I go home..that's do-able, right? right?

Also there's the problem of how i plan on not starving during break. Damn you amherst, why do you have to close valentine? Oh well, i'll be rewarded at the end of the week with huo guo, tons of chinese food and perhaps some turkey in there too.

Eyes on the prize, Tiffany, eyes on the prize.

Schwesterbesuch

Family weekend at amherst was this past weekend and I had a lovely visitor in the form of one miss jennie lin. We did some mosey'ing about campus, admiring the lovely construction around my school and got some delicious non-valentine food for dinner. Then she shelled out $5 to see my orchestra concert. Speaking of orchestra concert, it seems that we're incapable of playing both halves of any given concert well. Last concert we managed to fuck up the tchaikovsky piano concerto with several missed entrances and screwy tempo changes. The Shostakovich fifth symphony, on the other hand, sounded pretty good (which is good because the fifth is maybe my favorite symphony; both of these pieces are amazing by the way..if you would like them, do just ask). Then this weekend, our first half sounded wunderschön and the shostakovich went to hell in the 4th movement. How bad was it you ask? Bad enough that we had to stop the entire damn orchestra and restart the last five minutes of the piece. Erk.. thanks to my sister for pretending it wasnt that horrible =] Hopefully Mahler 2 next semester will go better.

After the concert, the orchestra had a party to drown our miserable performance in alcohol. Being super nerdy, we had had a make-your-own mustache theme because we had an all-Russian program on the concert:

[for more pictures, go have a look-see at my pictures in the bottom left link over there..you'll be rewarded by pictures of me with a mustachio]
Anyway, I dragged jennie to the party and did a horrendous job of introducing her to people ("tiffany, who are these people?" "oh right, right..") Anyway, (i hope) she had a good time. The moral of hte story is that you should visit me at Amherst and you could potentially see me to do embarrassing things like put on fake mustaches. Whee!
