One month later

Not much to report from Boston after now officially having lived here for a month. Still having a generally good time. Still spending way too much money going out to booze with people from McLean and Amherst. Work is good. Life is good.

Except that I haven't played the flute in many a month. And, in my supreme idiocy, forgot to pack both flute and music upon moving to Boston. I've been busy and distracted enough to not think about it all that much, but today was a slow day (at last) and in my general lazing about and listening to music, I started realizing how much I miss flute and orchestra. It was a little surprising how empty I feel without it.

In response to my music-related melancholia, I spent alot of today looking up BSO performances (they have a four-concert subscription series for 21-38 yr olds, including cocktail hours and private lectures before the concerts; it is always amusing to me when orchestras and museums set up these sort of singles things), area college/community orchestras to audition for and even musing over the possibility of buying a picc (despite the fact that i generally dislike the thing, it is an advantage when auditioning and can you argue with solos?) I wouldn't go crazy with a professional level piccolo, but a well-made solid wood piccolo would probably be in the ~$2000 range. Is it worth it? I'd say yes if I knew I would be playing in an orchestra during my two years here in Boston and in grad school. But I guess I don't know if I will be.

Sigh. At least I'll be going to Tanglewood on August 5th. Mahler's 2nd with Ozawa conducting the BSO. Love it.

Back in action

Sorry to leave you all hanging.

Boston and work has been, minus all things related to transportation and cars, wonderful. I'm not sure I could've asked for a better lab to work in, the people have been great. I've been out with them way too many times, and i can't say I'm not enjoying it.

July 4th was a good time at a BBQ down the street on the back deck of someone who works at McLean. It involved rattlesnake (not that bad). Caught the fireworks on the Charles which was a pretty good show, especially with a classy bottle of wine in a paper bag. Also went to the Boston Pops open rehearsal the night before to actually see the orchestra and performers (incl. Rockapella of Carmen Sandiego fame and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry).

The World Cup has taken over my sports life lately. All the teams I've been rooting for -- Deutschland (natuerlich), France for the final, Trinidad and Tobago just because -- didn't quite make it, but Germany made a good run at it. Nice to see Oli Kahn in form during the 3rd place game.

So overall, lots of fun being had. Still miss New York though, i have to admit.
